History

Skipsteknisk AS was founded in 1976 by Karstein Teige. Mr Teige developed the company, which started as a sole ownership, into one of Norway’s leading ship design companies.

The company’s location in Ålesund, Norway’s leading fishing port, made it natural to focus on fishing vessels and fishermen’s need for maritime services relating to ship design and ship management. During the late 1970s and the 1980s, the company established itself as a key player in the modernisation of the Norwegian, Danish, Icelandic, British and Canadian offshore fishing fleets.

Designing ice-strengthened factory trawlers became a speciality of the company. The company also won a major share in the market for pelagic trawlers and purse seiners, which it has maintained up until the present day. In 1996, Mr Teige decided to focus more on project development, and he handed over the management of the company to the present Managing Director, Hans Ove Holmøy.

The design of innovative and modern fishing vessels for fishermen around the world is still one of Skipsteknisk’s key business areas. The fishing vessel department at Skipsteknisk is managed by Inge Bertil Straume.

During the 1980s, the company began designing research vessels covering all segments of marine research, including fisheries, oceanographic and seismic research. Skipsteknisk has designed research vessels for research institutes all over the world, and today it is recognized as a leading ship designer in the field. The research vessel department is managed by Hans Ove Holmøy.

Skipsteknisk has established itself as a leading designer of specialised and advanced offshore service vessels. During the 1990s, the company implemented a strategy aimed at becoming a leading design company in this field. The offshore vessel department is managed by Bjørn-Oscar Kløvning.
