"James Cook", designated ST-345, was built at Flekkefjord Slipp & Maskinfabrikk AS, Norway, yard no. 185 for the Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC), United Kingdom. It was delivered in August 2006.

The vessel is noise reduced according to ICEC Cooperative Research Report no. 209-Underwater Noise of Research Vessels, and is outfitted and prepared mainly for the following duties:

  • Single & multibeam echosounder surveys
  • Integrated data logging
  • Seismic surveys
  • Clean seawater sampling
  • ROV operations
  • CTD surveys
  • Deepwater coring and trawling/towing
